Patient Safety Guide

How to choose a clinic safely

Written by an HCPC-registered clinician. Everything you need to know before booking any aesthetic treatment in England.

01
Check prescriber credentials
Any treatment involving prescription medication must be prescribed by a qualified prescriber before it can be administered. Ask specifically who prescribes at the clinic and verify their registration on the GMC, NMC, GDC, or GPhC register. A link to their registration should be readily available on request.
02
Verify CQC registration
Clinics providing regulated activities must be registered with the Care Quality Commission. Verify at cqc.org.uk. If a clinic offering injectable treatments is not listed, this is a serious red flag. CQC registration is the minimum baseline — not a guarantee of quality.
03
Require a face-to-face consultation
Any reputable clinic should require a proper face-to-face consultation before any injectable treatment. This is clinical assessment — reviewing your medical history, medications, contraindications, and realistic expectations. Clinics that skip this are prioritising bookings over safety.
04
Confirm emergency protocols and hyaluronidase
Any clinic performing filler treatments must have hyaluronidase on site — the enzyme used to dissolve filler in the event of vascular occlusion. Ask directly. A clinic that cannot answer this question clearly should not be performing these treatments.
05
Research the practitioner, not just the clinic
The clinic's CQC registration and the practitioner's qualifications are separate things. Ask who will be performing your treatment, what their qualifications are, and how long they have been practising this specific procedure.
06
Be sceptical of heavily discounted pricing
Premium aesthetic treatments require premium products, qualified prescribers, and proper clinical infrastructure. Significantly discounted treatment warrants direct scrutiny — ask what is different about their model before assuming it's simply good value.
07
Trust your instincts at consultation
If your consultation feels rushed, you feel pressured to book on the day, or anything feels off — leave. A good practitioner welcomes questions, manages expectations honestly, and is comfortable telling you when treatment is not appropriate.

Warning Signs

Red flags to watch for

Walk away if you encounter any of these at a clinic.

No face-to-face consultation required
Booking by WhatsApp without any clinical assessment is not acceptable practice for prescription treatments.
Cannot name the prescriber
If the clinic cannot tell you who prescribes their treatments or verify that person's registration, do not proceed.
No hyaluronidase on site
Any clinic performing filler without this emergency dissolver is operating recklessly.
Pressure to book on the day
Genuine clinical consultation never involves urgency. Pressure tactics are commercial, not clinical.
Prices significantly below market
Ask specifically what is different about their product or practice model if prices seem too good to be true.
Not CQC registered
Easily verifiable at cqc.org.uk. Absence of registration for a clinic offering regulated activities is a legal issue.
